Reading, Writing and Planning: Final Review and Moving Forward

This week was a time for a final consultation with the tutors and a check-up on the ideas that you have towards presenting the final product. I am still wanting to work with and play with sounds or soundscapes in particular spaces and see If I can change the feeling and vibe of a space. This idea is quite challenging and is something that I have been thinking about for the last few weeks.

The consultation this week with the tutors gave me some more things to look at and think about for the project, especially in relation to how it will look as a finished product and what sounds that I want to showcase in my work. The question of whether or not my project will work with a narrative, be subverted, have closed of open sounds (being able to hear the outside sounds through the headphones or not), big or small sounds and how these connections will be made between the spaces and the sounds I am thinking about putting in them.

On Care and Reflecting

20180615_162225This week I further brainstormed the medium of sound and wrote down what I was thinking about working on for the final project. This week I looked into what sounds I would like to use in my final project and where I would like them to be in the spaces. I also looked into what spaces I would like to use to present my final project and came up with a few that I wanted to use like the entry of the media building, the canteen and lunch space and maybe the outside courtyard. Other places like underneath the staircase were also considered as I think it would be interesting to make a smaller space in a large space.

Game Rules

I believe that through the playtesting stages of my game I have been able to change a lot of the rules of the game to make it more user-friendly and easier to play.

My game aims to get rid of all the cards in your hand through gameplay. To do this, players must put down one card per loop while reciting the cards before they put down their own card. If players fail to recite all cards in order, the player will have to pick up the pile of cards and add them to their deck. The game’s rules will be explained more in depth below:Read More »

Play Testing Game Prototype

I believe that the game I created involves some confrontation in the gameplay and that by adding this the mechanics of the game become more interesting and dynamic to play. The confrontational elements include the action cards which are scattered throughout the deck of cards. These action cards allow for a change in gameplay while it is progressing and allow for players to play strategically with each other.

Playtesting this week turned out to go really well. I had changed my game with the suggestions from last weeks test and found that the change made a big improvement in gameplay for the players. The players commented on the fact that they enjoyed the game and it was very easy and quick to pick up. There were also some other ideas that they brought up which I was debating on including in the game but found that it would make it to complicated or long which isn’t what I wanted to do.

Game Prototype and Abstraction

For my game this week I will be discussing Abstraction and whether my game has concepts of it, my progress with the prototype and an example of the rules which are being used in the playtesting.

Abstraction in games can be defined as:

The conceptual process that is a series of mental activities where rules are derived from literal signifiers.

Abstraction occurs when a concept provides the framework for a body of subordinate concepts.

Applying Research and Development

This week I ended up needing to get away from the main tutorial space and find a place to sit down and try to get my ideas for this project straight. This week I felt a bit overwhelmed and directionless with my idea and I was a bit confused.

I was found this week by one of the tutors and he sat down and discussed my ideas with me and helped me find a direction to work in and go forward with. I found this talk to be valuable and it really helped me find a path to go down and forget about the finished product and how it will look and just play around with my ideas. I knew the last few weeks that I wanted to work with man vs manmade sounds in space and found that my project over the weeks has involved much testing of ideas which is why I felt a bit overwhelmed with the number of ideas that I had running through my head.Read More »

Game Prototype and Materials

It For the prototype of the game Meme-ery only a few material components are being used to experiment with. These material components are the analogue playing cards which are the basis for the game playing. Due to the materials of this game being very limited, one could say that the price of creating, distributing and marketing will be quite low which is good.

I started my prototype for the game by using paper as my cards in order to set it up and be able to see it physically and test run the game. Overall the paper was annoying to use for this but it served its purpose as examples of the real thing that might be created. This would definitely work better on proper playing cards.Read More »

Live Tweeting

Over the last 7 weeks, I have been engaging in a number of screenings while also participating in something called ‘Live tweeting‘. During the screening of these movies and series, my peers and I have been engaging in discussions on Twitter through the #BCM325 which provided a fantastic medium to unpack thoughts and concepts. Live tweeting on Twitter allowed for quite a lot of discussion to happen between my peers while the screening was happening but also created somewhat of a community as we all became connected through the hashtag while talking about the screenings each week. Twitter definitely allowed for a lot more discussion to happen between my peers which was highlighted at the end of some screenings where we were prompted to talk about a theory, but no one wanted to say anything out loud. Quite interesting.Read More »

Brainstorming Game Ideas

During the class, we brainstormed ideas that we could potentially use for our final game concept. The brainstorming session in class was a great way to start thinking about the game and concepts that could be further expanded and developed. In this 5 minute brainstorm, there were a few good ideas but most of them were unusable and not something that I wanted to do. These ideas are listed below.
